On this week’s episode of Tent Talk, the InTents Business team chats about the recent 2019 InTents Conference. The gathering for farmers’ market professionals was held in San Diego, California in February. Brijet, Catt and Justine reminisce about the origins of and vision for the InTents Conference, how it’s developed, and why it’s important to keep bringing the market community together.

Best laid plans and some surprises

It takes all year to plan the annual InTents Conference. We know this is probably sort of a head scratcher for folks used to raising the curtain on a market every seven days. We share what went well and what didn’t turn out quite as planned. (No, that pizza wasn’t on the original menu, but the food got rave reviews.) It was terrific to see nearly equal numbers of farmers, food makers and market managers in attendance this year. They came from just up the coast in California, and from Oregon, Texas, Iowa, Indiana and beyond. Chris Quinlan and his team from MarketWurks and The New Farm author and speaker Brent Preston may have inspired the large number of Canadians that joined us. Or it may have been the polar vortex. We were delighted to see them and gain their insights, either way.

Looking at what’s next for the InTents Conference

Reviewing some of our favorite speakers and presentations, we share some of the special moments from the 2019 conference and talk about what we’d like to add to future events. We were honored to screen The Biggest Little Farm. Don’t miss this poignant and inspiring film when it opens at theaters throughout the US on May 10th, and look for movie night becoming a regular InTents Conference feature. Next up: share what you’d like to see more of via our upcoming InTents Survey. Then watch for a Save the Date for next year’s conference, more online content, more episodes of Tent Talk, and of course, more farmers’ markets.
